Castle Rock recognizes that traveler information web pages must be easily understood by all the traveling public. In order to provide this, we have developed a series of web pages that interact with CARS (Condition Acquisition and Reporting System) to replicate the maps with revised displays of conditions that are more easily understood by the traveling public. This allows us to work with each state to understand the local preferences for on-screen icons and other displays. Highway condition data stored
in CARS (Condition Acquisition and Reporting System) is available to
the general public via an internet-based traveler information website.
Providing the same data as that stored on 511, the site normally incorporates
511 into the website address, such as www.511maine.gov or www.511vt.com.
The site is also easily accessible from the main DOT website, which
is typically the central access point for information on statewide transportation-related
activities. | ||||

The websites display maps of different area views: statewide, regional, and, in some states, metropolitan areas. The maps display cities, counties, and major roads. Current events or incidents are overlaid on the maps as clickable icons and areas. Descriptions of the specific incidents are linked to their respective icons, as well as listed by priority underneath the map. In some states, additional icons that represent field components (DMS, VSL, etc.) may be clicked to obtain current status information. Users can access incident and condition information with two clicks of the mouse. Users have the ability to choose from maps that show only critical incidents, road conditions, weather information, commercial vehicle information, or roadwork. Dividing events into these categories enables users to find information pertinent to their journey more quickly. For example, if a traveler wishes to find out whether his regular commute is affected by ongoing roadwork, he may choose the “Roadwork” category. A user traveling to the airport or on a long distance journey may wish to discover what effects the weather has had on the roads. To date, Castle
Rock has designed, implemented and maintains ten state 511 websites.
Most recently, Castle Rock created a French language version of Maine’s
511 website, enabling the real possibility of more multi-lingual websites
in the future, particularly in states with a high number of tourists.
